Abstract: "While every production has differences in the pipeline that make it unique, there are standardized practices that are expected to be utilized when creating work for the animation industry. These practices ensure smooth transitions when handing work to other departments in a production’s pipeline. Unfortunately, for those new to working on backgrounds in the industry, it is difficult finding cohesive information on how backgrounds are expected to be created, structured, and delivered when collaborating with other departments. This makes it difficult to prepare for transitioning into the industry as a new professional. To ensure prospective background artists can adapt to the 2D animation industry, this thesis serves as a guide and generalized pipeline for creating backgrounds that teaches artists how to manage files, organize layers and background elements, as well as methods for delivering backgrounds to work cohesively with animation and compositing departments."
